When many people think about heroes, they think about the fictional characters in movies and books. However, the real heroes are those who dedicate their lives to helping others. Emergency responders are people who strive to help others. Just like the characters in comic books and the movies, emergency responders risk their lives to save others.

The sad thing is that emergency responders do not get the recognition that they deserve. These people often work long hours and they are usually not paid as well as others in the medical profession. Additionally, it can be quite stressful to deal with injured people on a daily basis.

In modern society, people uplift the wrong things by giving credit where credit is not due. Fictional characters are not the ones who should be called heroes. Again, a true hero is someone who risks his or her life to help another person. That is what an emergency responder does on a regular basis. It is time that these heroic people final get the credit and recognition that they deserve for their selfless acts.

It would be really cool to see a child walk up to an emergency responder and say “I want to be like you when I grow up.”

In an age when even the telephone seems almost obsolete, is it getting harder to be just people, face to face, in conversation? Is it becoming inconvenient to be close enough to look into each other’s eyes? Are we so willing to sacrifice intimacy for the extended reach of electronic media?

There is a commercial now airing on television (another of the technologies that is approaching obsolescence). At home, a mother shares with her daughter, via remote video link, her purchases after a shopping trip. The final items are clothing for the daughter, who almost begrudgingly surrenders from the video link and condescends to actual interpersonal communication with her mom–who is in the adjoining room.

The short abbreviations of texting have crept into other communications and influenced the way we write. The increasingly ever-present “social media” have extended our reach out into the world, our range of contact, but at the price of restricting our actual, physical interpersonal contacts.

If today’s technologies have made it inconvenient to speak face to face even to family members in our own homes, what will the technologies of the next century bring to our interpersonal relationships and our understanding of communication with each other?

In our busy lives we forget to listen to what our kids may be subjected to, however it is critical for us to become aware of those programs or adult conversations that, when we don’t think they are listening, they may be soaking up like sponges. Also like a sponge they are not discriminate about content of what they absorb. Please be assured that those who wish to influence our kids are very aware of the fertile ground of those sponges.
Be minduful of not only the content of what they hear but also, the Tempo which can cause stress and even raise the blood pressure of our little ones. Turn down the vlolume which may increase pressure on fragile ear drums and lead to hearing loss.
Kids hear within context of what they already know, therefore certain words may be misunderstood by them and be construed as bad or good. Our english language is especially susceptible to misunderstanding as it has so many homonyms in it, such as bowl (container) or bowl as in the game of bowling. Others are arms (weapons), arms (upper limbs), bear (animal), bear (give birth to), corn (food, ear of corn), corn (thick horny growth on toe), down (opposite of up), down (feathers).

Old Vs. New in the Auto Industry is a debate that is as old as the industry itself. When the mass production of the automobile was a dream put into action because of the assembly line in the early 1900s the cost of building a car went down and companies were able to produce hundreds more automobiles than ever before. This made cars an option for not just the extremely wealthy, and thus car culture was born.

An old idea in car manufacturing is the idea that the car might last you your entire life, and that you could one day pass it on to your son or daughter. Somewhere around the 1950s that idea changed and car companies started to advertise their new car models year after year with a concept called ‘perceived obsolescence’ in mind. Perceived obsolescence is when you think an object or product you own can no longer function just because a newer version came out. This sparked many to buy new models of cars each year.

During the 1970s gas crisis, people realized they needed cars that functioned well in case of an emergency. This was the start of the hybrid cars we see today.

Usually the musical market and hit parade are infiltrated by musicians who have had hits previously, but occasionally some group or band gets lucky and sneaks a hit amongst all the other hits on the billboard. Usually one hit wonders have the kind of appeal that causes someone to want to gag themselves profusely until they black out and a better song comes on the radio but there have been a few good songs that have come out of the won hit wonders over the years. Writing a song takes talent and unfortunately not everyone talented in the musical market earns themselves a hit, but many do.

One hit wonders are the types of songs that have enough of a catch and a hook to soak in listeners and keep them singing a certain bit of the song. Typically they aren’t big masterpieces or very innovative but they stand as more of a novelty song or a song that rides off the coattails of someone else that is successful in order to produce something that is similar musically.

One hit wonders are a great example of how someone can make it in the music industry and get a quick hit. fortunately for the poor victims of this poor music that is all that needs to be endured.

More and more states are legalizing medical marijuana for people with various medical issues that may require it. It is as simple as going to your doctor and getting a card that says that you are eligible to go to a dispensary and purchase various amounts of marijuana based on what your prescription is. Some are even getting medical marijuana cards that make them eligible to cultivate and grow marijuana in their homes.

There are 16 states that have allowed medical marijuana for use by patients. These states are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. Each state is different as to how much marijuana they will let you possess at one time with your card. Also, most of the states mentioned require you to have proof of residency when you go to purchase the marijuana.

Marijuana is becoming closer and closer to becoming made legal in all 50 states for medical use and made legal federally. Some even think that marijuana may be made legal for all to use no matter what because of the fact that it is less dangerous than alcohol and even tobacco which are both legal. Many think that making it legal will increase tax revenue for the government and help the nation with the debt problem.

Everyone loves a rascal. Society may frown and shake its collective head, but most of us aren’t above a private chuckle at the irreverent words of our more scandalous celebrities.

Mark Twain, seeing various denominations consign each other to hell for adhering to the “wrong” doctrines, remarked, “What a hell of a heaven it will be, when they get all these hypocrites assembled there!”

In 47 BC, Pharnaces II gambled that Rome was too weak from its recent civil war to stop him from helping himself to Roman territory. Gaius Julius Caesar, still on shaky ground with the Senate, roundly defeated him and sent a pointed message back to Rome: “Veni. Vidi. Vici.” I came. I saw. I conquered.

Alexander of Macedon, called Alexander the Great, upon reading the latest in a long line of demanding letters from his infamously demanding mother, is rumored to have said, “It’s a high rent she demands for nine months in the womb.”

A couple of millennia later, W.C. Fields, who made a career out of being a rascal, became infamous for his hatred of the city of Philadelphia. His tombstone is inscribed with the words, “All things considered, I’d rather be in Philadelphia.”
